What Can Sororities Offer You?
Recent research studies showed that sorority women were happier in
college,
more likely to graduate, more financially successful, and were more involved
in campus activities during college and in community work after college than
college women who didn’t join a sorority.
All sororities have 5 basic benefits:
sisterhood, scholarship,
leadership, philanthropy, and networking.
Sisterhood:
- When you join a sorority you have an immediate support network of college
and alumnae sisters.
- Although 4 years of college seems like a lifetime when you’re 18,
some of these friendships will last all your life.
- Some of your sisters will be bridesmaids at your wedding and will
still be around for your childrens’ weddings.
- Sisterhood is forever.
Scholarship:
- All sororities are founded on high academic achievement.
- Sororities have mentoring and time management programs, and files on current
classes.
- Sororities have national networks for members to use in their careers
and job relocations.
- NPC gives $350,000. in annual scholarships. All sororities offer thousands
of dollars in national and local scholarships.
- The Atlanta Alumnae Panhellenic Association awards scholarships to both collegiate and alumnae sorority members at our annual Spring Scholarship Luncheon. In 2008, AAPA gave $2400 to scholarship winners.
Leadership:
- You will enhance your decision-making skills and your oral/written skills
when you serve on chapter committees or as a committee chair or chapter officer.
- You’ll develop a lot of organizational
skills.
- Sororities have extensive leadership training programs for their officers.
- Sisters can open doors to membership in campus organizations, sports
teams, and student government.
Philanthropy:
- Philanthropy is ‘service to others’, a major part of each
sorority’s creed.
- Each sorority has a national philanthropy, such as breast cancer research,
Special Olympics, Ronald McDonald House, pediatric AIDS, etc.
- College chapters also support local charities - childrens’ hospitals,
community shelters, etc.
- After college, your job prospects are enhanced by a section of solid philanthropy
work in your resume.
- Many sorority and fraternity social events are fundraisers so you can help people AND socialize
at the same time.
Networking:
- There’s a very wide range of social events, sorority traditions, and interaction with sisters of all ages from all over North America.
Get togethers in college can be informal- like Friday night pizza with your sorority suite mates. Or it can be a traditional event - like Greek Week or Homecoming with
several days of contests and awards.
- When you become a new member, it’s time for your sorority to celebrate.
Usually there is a fun event the first night you join. Later, fraternities
organize socials to introduce their new members.
- Social events help ease the day-to-day stress of college study and help sisters motivate each other to excel in classwork or internships.
- Later in college, social events extend to alumnae organizations. Getting to know alumnae can be a big help when it's time to find a job, get settled in a new city, or find a place to live.
